Before the Indian Rebellion of 1857 against British rule, there were many smaller but significant uprisings across India. One of these was by Umaji Naik in Pune. Naik gathered members of his tribe, the Ramoshis, and made several incursions into British strongholds. The Ramoshi community has been traditionally associated with the Maratha forces. They were killedars (those who guard the forts) and usually occupied the foothills at the base of forts. Naik led the revolt against the British in Pune. On February 16, 1831, he issued a declaration against the British government and appealed to Indians to rebel by not paying taxes, looting government treasures, and giving up government jobs. Unfortunately, he was caught by British forces in December of the same year. He was tried and held at the prison that existed where Mamledar Kacheri is located today. It is believed that before the British occupied the premises and converted it into a jail, the site was used by the Marathas to store ammunition. Naik was hanged from a peepal tree on the same premises on February 3, 1832, and was left hanging for three days as a deterrent to any budding revolutionaries. Naik thus became famous as an adi krantikaari (first revolutionary) in India’s struggle for freedom. This samadhi (memorial), which is in Naik’s name, and jail, collectively known as Mamledar Kacheri (tax administrator’s office), are located in Shukrawar Peth, on the busy Shivaji Road. Mamledar Kacheri today houses offices of the revenue department and the settlement commissioner, as well as a police station.
